What exactly is a “Financial Doctor?”
Your family has a physician and dentist to care for your physical health. Why shouldn’t your family have a “financial doctor” to be there to care for your financial health? Well, now you can. Barnett Financial Planning is offering a new concept in financial planning to help your family stay “fiscally fit.” Instead of the traditional financial planning approach of being “sold” financial products, Barnett Financial Planning offers individuals and families the opportunity to have an ongoing relationship with a trusted advisor, their own “financial doctor.” Similar to the relationship you have with your family doctor, your financial doctor will guide you in making sound financial decisions that are in your best interest now and in the future. And just as you would pay your doctor on a fee-for-service basis, Barnett Financial Planning operates on a “fee-only” basis. We do not sell products of any kind, and we accept no commissions. We provide advice in much the same manner as your regular doctor: we start with a diagnosis, we develop a treatment plan, we help you implement the plan, and then we monitor your progress toward your ultimate financial goals. And in much the same manner as your family doctor emphasizes preventive healthcare, we emphasize a preventive approach to financial planning.
Barnett Financial Planning, a Registered Investment Advisor firm located in Tustin, CA provides fee-only financial planning and investment advice on an hourly, as-needed basis to individuals and families without regard to a minimum account size or income. Barnett Financial Planning was founded by Dr. David I. Barnett, CFP®, a retired family dentist who, in the later stages of his life, has devoted his time to helping “real” people achieve their financial foothold on the American dream.
Barnett Financial Planning prides itself on the honesty and integrity of its founder. Dr. Barnett treats each of his clients with the same care and compassion he provided to his private practice dental patients. Barnett Financial Planning does not accept commissions or third-party compensation for its recommendations, so all advice provided is rendered conflict-free.
Prior to founding Barnett Financial Planning, Dr. Barnett had practiced as a general dentist for 27 years. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1977 with a BA degree in biomathematics, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1981. While dentistry was his profession, investing and financial planning were his passions.
As a husband and father of three children, Dr. Barnett understands the challenges of budgeting and cash flow, investments, college and retirement planning, insurance, and estate planning. For many years, family, friends and colleagues have asked his advice and opinions about personal financial matters and investment options. Although he was self-taught and self-motivated in investing and financial issues, he felt a more formal education was required of someone providing professional financial advice. To that end, he enrolled in and completed the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program at the University of California-Irvine in 2007. In March 2007 he passed the CFP® exam and in October 2007 he founded Barnett Financial Planning, an independent Registered Investment Advisor firm in Tustin, CA. In February 2010 he completed all four CFP®-Board requirements – education, examination, experience, and ethics – to earn the right to use the CFP® designation.
Dr. Barnett is proud to be a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA); the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA); and the Garrett Planning Network (GPN), an international affiliation of fee-only financial planners dedicated to serving people from all walks of life on an hourly, as-needed basis.
